Too Much Love? American Pets Growing Weight Issues - Health ...

The obesity epidemic in the U.S. isn't just a human problem. It seems our pets are too fat as well.

A recent study by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention found that more than half of all dogs and cats in the U.S. are overweight or obese.

Obesity is defined as being 30 percent above normal weight, and one-fifth of our pets qualify.

One veterinarian told the Chicago Tribune that people see pets as part of the family and they tend to overfeed them.

"It comes from the fact that they are beloved," veterinarian Louise Murray told the Tribune.

"We see them as part of the family, and we feed them. (The obesity)comes from a good place because we love them. But we need to get it under control because it can cause health problems," she added.

Experts say oftentimes the pet owners don't even realize their dog or cat is overweight. They just don't see it.

However, weight issues can cause real health problems in animals.

Veterinarians suggest that pet owners should consult with their veterinarian for evaluation and a proper weight loss program that includes diet and exercise.

Check your pet for its proper weight.
