Next Stop Mars! Huge NASA Rover Launches Toward Red Planet (SPACE.com)

This story was updated at 10:30 a.m. EST.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. ? NASA has launched its next Mars rover, kicking off a long-awaited mission to investigate whether the Red Planet could ever have hosted microbial life.

The car-size Curiosity rover blasted off atop its Atlas 5 rocket today (Nov. 26) at 10:02 a.m. EST (1502 GMT), streaking into a cloudy sky above Cape Canaveral Air Force Station here. The huge robot's next stop is Mars, though the 354-million-mile (570-million-kilometer) journey will take 8 1/2 months.

Joy Crisp, a deputy project scientist for the rover at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., called the liftoff "spectacular."

"This feels great," she said as she watched the rocket lift off from Cape Canaveral. [Photos: Curiosity Rover Launches to Mars]

Pamela Conrad, deputy principal investigator for MSL at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., said, "Every milestone feels like such a relief."

NASA expected around 13,500 people to watch the liftoff from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, with many more viewing from surrounding areas, setting a record for the number of spectators watching an unmanned launch.

"It's a beautiful day," Conrad added. "The sun's out, and all these people came out to watch."

The work Curiosity does when it finally arrives should revolutionize our understanding of the Red Planet and pave the way for future efforts to hunt for potential Martian life, researchers said.

"It is absolutely a feat of engineering, and it will bring science like nobody's ever expected," Doug McCuistion, head of NASA's Mars exploration program, said of Curiosity. "I can't even imagine the discoveries that we're going to come up with."

A long road to launch

Curiosity's cruise to Mars may be less challenging than its long and bumpy trek to the launch pad, which took nearly a decade.

NASA began planning Curiosity's mission ? which is officially known as the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) ? back in 2003. The rover was originally scheduled to blast off in 2009, but it wasn't ready in time.

Launch windows for Mars-bound spacecraft are based on favorable alignments between Earth and the Red Planet, and they open up just once every two years. So the MSL team had to wait until 2011.

That two-year slip helped boost the mission's overall cost by 56 percent, to its current $2.5 billion. But today's successful launch likely chased away a lot of the bad feelings still lingering after the delay and cost overruns.

"I think you could visibly see the team morale improve ? the team grinned more, the team smiled more ? as the rover and the vehicle came closer, and more and more together here when we were at Kennedy [Space Center]" preparing for liftoff, MSL project manager Pete Theisinger of JPL said a few days before launch.

A rover behemoth

Curiosity is a beast of a rover. At 1 ton, it weighs five times more than each of the last two rovers NASA sent to Mars, the golf-cart-size twins Spirit and Opportunity, which landed in January 2004 to search for signs of past water activity.

While Spirit and Opportunity each carried five science instruments, Curiosity sports 10, including a rock-zapping laser and equipment designed to identify organic compounds ? carbon-based molecules that are the building blocks of life as we know it.

Some of these instruments sit at the end of Curiosity's five-jointed, 7-foot-long (2.1-meter) robotic arm, which by itself is nearly half as heavy as Spirit or Opportunity.

The arm also wields a 2-inch (5-centimeter) drill, allowing Curiosity to take samples from deep inside Martian rocks. No previous Red Planet rover has been able to do this, researchers say.

"We have an incredible rover," said MSL deputy project scientist Ashwin Vasavada of JPL. "It's the biggest and most capable scientific explorer we've ever sent to the surface of another planet."

Assessing Martian habitability

Curiosity is due to arrive at Mars in early August 2012, touching down at a 100-mile-wide (160-km) crater called Gale.

While the rover's launch was dramatic, its landing will be one for the record books, if all goes well. A rocket-powered sky crane will lower the huge robot down on cables ? a maneuver never tried before in the history of planetary exploration. [Video: Curiosity's Peculiar Landing]

A giant mound of sediment rises 3 miles (5 km) into the Martian air from Gale Crater's center. The layers in this mountain appear to preserve about one billion years of Martian history. Curiosity will study these different layers, gaining an in-depth understanding of past and present Martian environments and their potential to harbor life.

Life as we know it depends on liquid water. So the rover will likely spend a lot of time poking around near the mound's base, where Mars-orbiting spacecraft have spotted minerals that form in the presence of water, such as clays and sulfates.

"Going layer by layer, we can do the main goal of this mission, which is to search for habitable environments, " Vasavada said. "Were any of those time periods in early Mars history time periods that could have supported microbial life?"

But if Curiosity climbs higher, its observations could shed light on Mars' shift from relatively warm and wet long ago to cold, dry and dusty today, researchers said.

"We want to understand those transitions, so that's why we're headed there [to Gale]," said Bethany Ehlmann of JPL and Caltech in Pasadena.

Setting the stage for life detection

Curiosity isn't designed to search for Martian life. In fact, if the red dirt of Gale Crater does harbor microbes, the rover will almost certainly drive right over them unawares.

But MSL is a key bridge to future efforts that could actively hunt down possible Martian lifeforms, researchers said. Curiosity's work should help later missions determine where ? and when ? to look.

"We don't really detect life per se," Vasavada said. "We set the stage for that life detection by figuring out which time periods in early Mars history were the most likely to have supported life and even preserved evidence of that for us today."

(AP) ? Andrew Luck walked back into the overcrowded home locker room at Stanford Stadium, greeted by hugs and handshakes and serenaded with a chant that suited him just perfectly.

"Macho, Macho man!" teammates bellowed, singing the lyrics to the Village People's famous song. "I want to be a Macho man!"

Only one has earned that title on The Farm.

Luck set the school record for the most career touchdown passes and eclipsed his own single-season mark, throwing for 233 yards and four scores to lead fourth-ranked Stanford past No. 22 Notre Dame 28-14 in his home finale Saturday night.

Luck topped John Elway's record of 77 touchdown passes and helped the Cardinal (11-1) build a 21-0 halftime lead. He has thrown for 80 touchdowns in three years ? while it took Elway all four ? and 35 this season.

"There's no player in America like Andrew Luck," Stanford coach David Shaw said. "Forget about the stats. Forget about the comparisons of other guys. It doesn't matter."

Luck of the Irish? Forget it.

Luck is on Stanford's side.

The victory likely vaulted the Cardinal into consideration for an at-large BCS bowl bid for the second straight year ? with the Fiesta Bowl among the leading possible destinations ? but they will not play for a major championship this season. The lone loss to Oregon put the Ducks in the Pac-12 title game out of the North Division and crushed Stanford's dreams of a national title.

"I think one loss, that's great," said Luck, who turned down a chance to be the NFL draft's top pick this year. "We've been on a 23-2 run for a while, I think it's pretty impressive. We put ourselves in position to be in a good bowl game, and that's what we wanted to do."

Notre Dame's stumbled at the finish line again.

Tommy Rees threw an interception, lost a fumble and took a bruising blow to the ribs for Notre Dame (8-4) before getting benched. Andrew Hendrix threw for 192 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score in a second-half rally for the Fighting Irish that came up short.

Keeping Stanford close gave the Irish little satisfaction.

"We didn't come here for second prize," said Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly, who would not name a starting quarterback for the bowl game. "We got off to a slow start and battled against it. To me, the scoreboard showed 28-14 and that's not good enough. The slow start put us in a tough position."

Stanford coach David Shaw shined the spotlight on his program and his quarterback's Heisman Trophy campaign with a calculated rip of the "flawed" BCS system this week. The Cardinal's play matched his words for 30 minutes.

A sloppy second half almost took everything else Stanford had worked for this season.

Kelly benched Rees in favor of Hendrix to start the third quarter, and the move pumped some life into a stagnant Irish offense. Notre Dame took advantage of pass interference and roughing the passer penalties for its first score.

Hendrix threw a 6-yard TD to Michael Floyd to slice Stanford's lead to 21-7 halfway through the third quarter. Floyd finished with 95 catches on the year, breaking the single-season mark of 93 set by Golden Tate in 2009.

The Irish were driving for another score when Hendrix overthrew a receiver, the ball was tipped and intercepted by Michael Thomas. When Notre Dame regained possession, Hendrix was sacked by A.J. Tarpley for a 13-yard loss that sent another drive tumbling.

"Consistency is the one thing I have struggled with the most," said Hendrix, who completed 11 of 24 passes.

Only room for one quarterback to steal the show.

Luck quickly connected with Coby Fleener for a 55-yard TD pass to extend Stanford's lead to 28-7 with 5:40 remaining to put the game out of reach. Fleener also caught a 28-yard TD in the first half that gave Luck every major school touchdown record.

Stanford's Senior Day belonged to the redshirt junior.

Luck lobbed a fade to the short corner of the end zone to complete a 3-yard score to Levine Toilolo, giving Stanford a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Even he had to hold back a smile running to the sideline to a swarm of well-wishes from teammates for the records-tying toss.

But Luck lost his rhythm when a back-side blitzer closed the pocket, and he tossed a short pass that Darius Fleming intercepted and returned 35 yards. Notre Dame took over at the Stanford 10 after a 15-yard penalty on Fleener for a horse collar.

Stanford stifled the Irish on consecutive plays and forced a 20-yard field goal that David Ruffer missed wide right.

Luck followed with a 28-yard TD pass to Fleener. The tight end dragged cornerback Robert Blanton the final 10 yards into the end zone, sealing Luck's marks in the school record book.

"I think it's something I'll be able to tell my kids and grandkids when I'm watching Andrew on TV someday," Fleener said. "He's got my Heisman vote."

Vuzix Wrap 1200 hands-on: A 75-inch screen you can throw in a bag (Digital Trends)

Vuzix-Wrap-1200-lead

Mobile gadgets are the future of consumer technology. Unfortunately, most of us are limited to viewing on-the-go content on the relatively tiny screens of smartphones, tablets and laptops. So, what if you could carry around the equivalent of a 75-inch television anywhere you go? Would you do it? Because that?s exactly what near-eye display (NED) maker Vuzix promises with the Vuxiz Wrap 1200 display glasses. Does the Wrap 1200 really deliver a big-screen experience? We went hands-on to find out.

Vuzix-Wrap-1200-getting-started

Getting started

Setting up the Wrap 1200 is surprisingly easy ? basically, you just turn them on, plug them in, sit back and watch your video.

A small box containing two AA batteries?powers the glasses, and also has all the controls. Vuzix smartly packs the Wrap 1200 with a pair of rechargeable batteries, and a battery charger that plugs into any USB port. Vuzix claims the glasses deliver five hours of video playback on a single charge. Right out of the box, we found that estimate just about on point ? we watch just about four hours of video before we had to recharge.

The glasses plug into the control box, as does one of the variety of input connectors that also come with the Wrap 1200. They include standard A/V (for DVD players, etc.), component (for gaming systems or Blu-ray), mini HDMI, and even a 30-pin connector for plugging into any of Apple?s variety of iDevices that offer video playback, including the iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad devices.

Also included with the Wrap 1200 is a pair of noise-canceling headphones, which plug directly into the glasses. If you?re using an iPhone or other iDevice, you can also simply plug your headphones into the headphone jack and skip the Vuzix headphones altogether.

Vuzix-look

Look and feel

There?s no way around this one: The Wrap 1200 glasses look ridiculous. Yes, there?s a bit of a sci-fi charm to them, with the shiny, impenetrable black ?lenses? (which simply cove up the screens and other components ? you cannot see through them). Still, you?re not going to win any fashion points wearing a pair of these things. Fortunately, looking cool is not the purpose of the Wrap 1200.

Overall, the Wrap 1200 has sturdy construction ? even if it feels somewhat flimsy. We didn?t try chucking the glasses at a brick wall or anything, but we did drop them a couple of times on non-carpeted floors, and nothing happened. That said, we?d be careful when carting the Wrap 1200 around, just as you would with any other expensive piece of gadgetry. (We?ll get to the expensive part here shortly.)

When we first opened the box, and saw the controller box, the headphones, the cord from the glasses to the controller, and the other cord from the controller to whatever it is you decided to plug the Wrap 1200 into, it seemed like far too much to deal with. In reality, however, we were pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to manage all the different bits and pieces. Vuzix also gives you a little black bag you can pack all the various components into, to keep from losing them instantaneously.

Vuzix-watching-video

Watching video

Of course, the real question is: Does it really look like you?re watching a 75-inch TV? And the answer is? yes, actually, it does. In fact, it?s almost more like watching a movie in a theater, from a seat in the back half of the room.

The Wrap 1200 has two screens, one for each eye. Each screen has a resolution of 852 x 480, which gives the image quality a fairly high resolution. Does it look as crisp and clear as watching a movie or TV show off a high-end projector or on a high-definition plasma television? No, not even close. But it does look as though you?re watching a fully-immersive screen that measures at least 75-inches.

We were pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable it was to watch movies on the Vuzix. During the first test, which was only supposed to last about 20 minutes, we ended up watching an entire movie from Netflix via our iPhone 4. After the first 15 minutes or so, we completely forgot we were wearing a pair of silly-looking video glasses.

There are, of course, a number of downsides to the Wrap 1200. First, it is a bit difficult to get the glasses to fit properly. While the screens can rotate up or down to adjust for an optimal viewing angle, the entire contraption still fits rather awkwardly on the face. It???s possible that some of you out there have a mug perfectly suited for the design of the Wrap 1200, but we apparently don???t.

Second, the world around you is fully visible in the lower part of your visual spectrum. That is to say, if there is a lot of movement happening around you, or you?re trying to watch in a very bright room, you?re probably going get annoyed with this device. Vuzix does make a ?Lightshield,? which is made of rubber and fits over the Wrap 1200, but it?s not particularly well designed. Or, at least, we were too dumb to figure out how to attach them properly.

One feature we didn?t get to check out was the Wrap 1200?s 3D playback capabilities. Unfortunately, we didn?t have anything that played 3D video to conduct this test. Since the image quality of the Wrap 1200 is solid, we imagine that 3D looks pretty good. Since we didn?t test that feature, however, that?s simply a guess.

Conclusion

Before we can say anything definitive about the Wrap 1200, it?s important to point out the price: $499. That?s right, these things cost as much as a low-end iPad 2. Because of this high price-point, we can?t fully recommend the Wrap 1200 to everyone. Yes, they are good for watching video content while on an airplane, bus or riding in a car. But for most people, we?d recommend just going with that iPad 2, which has a smaller-than-75-inch screen (9.7-inches, to be exact), but also does a whole lot more than just play videos, and is actually easier to cart around on trips.

If Vuzix wants to break into the mainstream, it?s going to have to significantly reduce the cost of its display glasses. (Not to mention making them look less absurd.) Fortunately, the company recently signed a partnership deal with Nokia to develop the next generation of NEDs, which should help move the company toward that goal.

?[Our] current products are bulky, expensive, and lower resolution,? Vuzix CEO Paul Travers told us via email. ?This relationship changes all of that.?

The first NEDs to pack the advanced Nokia technology will ship early next year ? to the U.S. military. Travers says the company is still working out when the next-gen NEDs will be available for the consumer market. But unless you have $500 burning a hole in your pocket, we?d recommend waiting until then to pick up a pair.

QR codes 101: What those squiggles do

Quick Response (QR) codes link consumers to websites fast. Here's how to use them, and why you'd want to.

All of a sudden, Quick Response (QR) codes are everywhere. The checker-patterned squares now come emblazoned on everything from in-store displays at Macy's to bottles of Heinz ketchup. You may have even spotted them in recent issues of this magazine.

Snap a picture of one with your smart phone and the QR code will automatically load a website, cue up a video, or download a coupon right to your device.

Yet despite QR codes' seeming ubiquity, few people know how to use them. The idea sounds simple ? scan and enjoy! ? but using the technology actually requires a little prep work.

So, with companies experimenting with increasingly frequent and creative uses for QR codes, here's a quick primer on how to use them and why you'd want to.

"Nobody's going to have to go back home and go, 'What was the website I was going to look up earlier? I can't remember,' " says Rick Mathieson, a marketing consultant and author of "The On-Demand Brand." Now you can pull out your phones ? the one device that people have on them all the time ? and take action immediately."

"QR codes are a notion whose time has come," says Mr. Mathieson, "if only the technology would catch up with the concept."

The problem, he says, revolves around the three QR hurdles. First, you need to have a certain kind of phone. The Apple iPhone, Windows Phone 7 devices, and the numerous Google Android phones all make the cut. BlackBerry, Nokia, and other phones might work, depending on whether they have both a camera and some way to download software, which leads to the second hurdle:

You need to download a QR program onto your phone. Despite the promise of "scan and enjoy," snapping a normal cellphone photo of the black-and-white patterns won't do anything special. The phone must use an application designed to read QR codes. The good news: Each of the devices mentioned above offers multiple, free options. A quick search for "QR" in your respective app store should do the trick.

And third, marketers need to win you over. Even after you download the right software, using a QR code requires you to take out your phone, open the correct app, let your camera focus on the two-tone tiles, snap the picture, wait for the phone to decipher the code, and then enjoy your reward. The process from reaching into your pocket to receiving your prize takes about 20 seconds ? not exactly convenient on the go.

Greek activists take on the power company

(AP) ? The Robin Hoods in this northern Greek town sport rubber gloves, fuses and orange stickers.

Nearly two years of pay cuts, job cuts and tax hikes have pummeled living standards in debt-crippled Greece and the country is facing record unemployment and a fourth year of recession in 2012. On a personal level, that means many in Veria can't pay for basic necessities such as electricity and end up getting cut off from the grid.

That's where the "Citizens of Veria" activists step in.

The group illegally reconnects needy households back to the electric grid in a direct challenge to the country's dominant power provider, the Public Power Corporation.

"By cutting off power, (PPC) punishes young children, elderly people and generally those who can't cope without it," said activist Nikos Aslanoglou. "We decided that we had to reconnect them. We're not hiding, everybody knows who we are."

He says the group has so far reconnected dozens of households, particularly in the villages and small towns outlying Veria.

Greece sank into a financial crisis in 2009 after it emerged that authorities had been falsifying financial data for years. The fallout from that blocked the country's access to bond markets. Greece only escaped bankruptcy with a euro110 billion ($147 billion) international rescue loan in May 2010, and when that was not enough, a second, euro130 billion ($174 billion) rescue deal that awaits final approval.

In return, the government has promised to slash bloated budget deficits through harsh austerity measures.

As jobs become rarer and worse-paid, many in this northern farming region are falling through a weakening social safety net. In the village of Agia Marina, 9 miles (15 kilometers) from Veria, activists recently reconnected the house of a disabled, 34-year-old single mother, who lives with four of her five children.

As they left, they placed an orange sticker on the electricity meter that reads: "Citizens of Veria. Social solidarity. We are reconnecting the power."

The woman's eldest daughter, a 19-year-old student, said before the activists came her siblings ? aged from 6 to 18 ? had to study by candlelight or with oil lamps in an unheated house.

"Our only income is a euro400-euro500 ($535-$668) welfare payment every two months," said the student, Vasso. "PPC disconnected us because we owed them money, and we were left in the dark for about a month, but then some gentlemen came and reconnected us. Now we have heating again."

She didn't want her full name used because she was afraid authorities would track down her family.

What the activists are doing is illegal and can be punished by more than ten years' imprisonment depending on the size of the outstanding bills, although in most cases sentences do not exceed five years.

"Greek law treats the theft of electricity like any other common theft," University of Thessaloniki law professor Lambros Margaritis said.

Undeterred, a three-strong activist team recently reconnected a house in the small town of Meliki, where a 54-year-old woman lives with her two unemployed sons in their thirties. Working deftly, it took them 15 minutes.

"We're not stealing, the electricity consumption is recorded," Aslanoglou said. "The poor houseowners can't face consequences, it's us who do the reconnecting."

Hence the stickers.

Veria activists claim their campaign is catching on in other parts of the country ? particularly since the introduction in September of a deeply resented new property tax levied through power bills. People who can't pay the new tax face losing their power supply.

That prospect has enraged even PPC employees, who staged a sit-in at a company office in Athens to disrupt the collection of the new emergency tax.

While the Veria municipal authority says have-nots should not be disconnected over the new tax, Mayor Haroula Ousountzoglou says the activists are going too far.

"What the group is doing may be very romantic, it is, however, dangerous," Ousountzoglou told the AP. "PPC just goes and cuts off the electricity again, and imposes additional charges."

In cases of repeated illegal reconnection, homeowners can also face prosecution ? or have their link severed at the nearest electricity pole, a drastic move that activists are powerless to counter.

PPC public relations officer Kimon Stergiotis warned that the company is determined to protect its interests.

"To illegally reconnect cut power links poses severe threats to the life and property of unsuspecting citizens," he said. "In any case, PPC will use the law to its utmost severity."

Ousountzoglou said her town has about 330 families on a welfare program that sometimes includes assistance in paying power bills.

"But our funds are constantly dwindling, and I keep making the rounds of local firms to ask for contributions," she added.

The Veria mayor has threatened to sue PPC if people who really can't pay the property tax are left without power.

"We told them we're not joking," she said. "PPC can't behave like that to needy people."

George Clooney named as witness at Berlusconi sex trial (Reuters)

MILAN (Reuters) ? George Clooney will be called as a defense witness at former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's trial on charges he paid for sex with a minor, court officials said Wednesday.

The Oscar-winner was among 214 witnesses admitted by a Milan court for the defense and prosecution. Witnesses for the defense also include footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and Clooney's former girlfriend, Elisabetta Canalis.

Berlusconi is accused of paying Karima el Mahroug, also known as Ruby, for sex when she was 17. The 75-year-old is also charged with abuse of power for getting the Moroccan-born Ruby released from custody after she was arrested for theft in Milan.

They both deny the accusations.

Berlusconi's defense has called Clooney as a witness because Ruby said she had seen the actor and Canalis at one of Berlusconi's parties.

The trial was adjourned until December 2 and it was not clear when Clooney would take to the witness stand.

University hit by new climate leak ahead of talks (AP)

LONDON ? The British university whose stolen emails caused a global climate science controversy in 2009 says those behind the breach have apparently released a second and potentially far larger batch of old messages.

University of East Anglia spokesman Simon Dunford said that while academics didn't have the chance yet to examine the roughly 5,000 emails apparently dumped into the public domain Tuesday, a small sample examined by the university "appears to be genuine."

The university said in a statement that the emails did not appear to be the result of a new breach. Instead, the statement said that the emails appeared to have been stolen two years ago and held back until now "to cause maximum disruption" to the imminent U.N. climate talks next week in Durban, South Africa.

If that is confirmed, the timing and nature of the leak would follow the pattern set by the so-called "Climategate" emails, which caught prominent scientists stonewalling critics and discussing ways to keep opponents' research out of peer-reviewed journals.

Those hostile to mainstream climate science claimed the exchanges proved that the threat of global warming was being hyped, and their publication helped destabilize the failed U.N. climate talks in Copenhagen, Denmark, which followed several weeks later.

Climategate also dealt a blow to the reputation of the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit, which is one of the world's leading centers for the study of how world temperatures have varied over time.

Although a host of reviews have since vindicated the unit's science, some of its practices ? in particular efforts to hide data from opponents ? have come under strong criticism. The university says it is now much more open about what it does.

The content of the new batch of emails couldn't be immediately verified ? The Associated Press has not yet been able to secure a copy ? but climate skeptic websites carried what they said were excerpts.

Although their context couldn't be determined, the excerpts appeared to show climate scientists talking in conspiratorial tones about ways to promote their agenda and freeze out those they disagree with. There are several mentions of "the cause" and discussions of ways to shield emails from freedom of information requests.

Penn State University Prof. Michael Mann ? a prominent player in the earlier controversy whose name also appears in the latest leak ? described Tuesday's development as "a truly pathetic episode," blaming agents of the fossil fuel industry for "smear, innuendo, criminal hacking of websites, and leaking out-of-context snippets of personal emails."

In an email to the AP, he said that the real story behind the leak was "an attempt to dig out 2-year-old turkey from Thanksgiving '09. That's how desperate climate change deniers have become."

Bob Ward, with the London School of Economics' Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change, said in an email that he wasn't surprised by the leak.

"The selective presentation of old email messages is clearly designed to mislead the public and politicians about the strength of the evidence for man-made climate change," he said. "But the fact remains that there is very strong evidence that most the indisputable warming of the Earth over the past half century is due to the burning of fossil fuels and other human activities."

The source of the latest leaked emails was unclear. The perpetrator of the original hack has yet to be unmasked, although British police have said their investigation is still active.

Three men killed "execution style" near Arizona-Mexico border (Reuters)

TUCSON, Arizona (Reuters) ? The bodies of three suspected drug traffickers were found shot to death "execution style" in a remote area near the Arizona-Mexico border, police said on Tuesday, in a crime possibly committed by bandits.

Santa Cruz County Sheriff Antonio Estrada said Border Patrol agents found the bodies of the three men on Monday in the Tumacacori Mountains, about 20 miles northwest of the border city of Nogales.

Estrada said all three men had been shot in the head. Two were identified as Mexican nationals, aged 21 and 42, while the third man has not yet been identified.

"We suspect, because of the activity that is generated up there by illegal aliens and drug traffickers, that they were very possibly hauling drugs, and might have been ripped off," Estrada told Reuters.

"It's the first triple homicide since I have been here, about 19 years ... It is disturbing because of the way these people were murdered, execution style," he added.

Estrada said the bodies had lain in the area, known as the Devil's Canyon, for up to two weeks before being spotted by a Border Patrol helicopter crew on Monday.

They were found a few miles from the spot where Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was shot dead by suspected border bandits in December 2010.

Terry was a member of the Border Patrol's elite tactical unit, dubbed Bortac, which was hunting down border bandits suspected of committing robberies and violent assaults in the area.

HP releases Q4 2011 earnings: $9.7 billion operating profit for fiscal year

It hasn't been the best year for HP, what with the demise of webOS and the uncertainty surrounding its status as a PC maker. But, Meg Whitman hasn't taken the bridge of a sunken ship, though things are far from peachy keen. HP just posted its Q4 2011 earnings, and the company cleared a healthy $9.7 billion operating profit in 2011, though that's down 10 percent from last year. Total revenue for the quarter was 32.1 billion, a three percent decline from 2010. And, for those wondering just how much the death of webOS cost the company? Turns out that dalliance took a $3.3 billion chunk out of HP's bottom line. So, the news isn't the best for you HP fans, but we'll be listening in on the earnings call later today, so stay tuned for more details. Impatient folks can find plenty more financial figures in the Source link and PR that follow.

Update: CEO Meg Whitman and CFO Cathie Lesjac were on the call, and while specifics were hard to come by, they did let loose a couple hints regarding the company's future direction. Meg once again assured us all that HP and PSG are meant to be together, so the king of PC makers plans to keep its crown. Additionally, both bigwigs stressed that the company will be plowing more of its money in 2012 into R&D to foster "organic innovation" instead of buying it through outside acquisitions. Given the massive case of buyer's remorse HP had this year, that's probably a pretty good idea.

Protests flare up in Bahrain before unrest report

(AP) ? Riot police fired tear gas and stun grenades at demonstrators Wednesday after clashes erupted just hours before the release of an independent report on Bahrain's harsh crackdowns on the largest Arab Spring unrest in the Gulf.

The unrest outside the Bahraini capital Manama reflects the tense backdrop in the tiny island kingdom ahead of the highly anticipated report, which includes probes into alleged abuses by security forces after the country's majority Shiites opened their most sustained uprising for greater rights.

The special investigation commission, which was green lighted by Bahrain's Sunni monarchy in a bid to ease tensions, has spent months interviewing thousands of witnesses, officials and others about the chaotic and bloody months after protests began in February. Details of the report, which will focus on the period between Feb. 14 and March 30, have been a tightly held secret.

But conciliatory statements by the government in advance suggests authorities believe it could cast a harsh light on the tactics used against demonstrators and already noted in rights groups allegations: widespread arrests, purges from workplaces and universities, destruction of Shiite mosques and jail house abuses.

At least 35 people have been killed in violence related to the uprising, including several members of the security forces.

The latest street battles broke out after a 44-year-old man died when his car crashed into a house earlier in the day. Protesters say he swerved to avoid security vehicles. Bahrain's government said it has opened an investigation.

Although Bahrain's bloodshed and chaos is small in comparison with the huge upheavals across the Arab world ? including renewed protests in Egypt ? the island's conflict resonates from Tehran to Washington.

Bahrain is a critical U.S. ally as home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet. Washington has taken a cautious line because of what's at stake: urging Bahrain's leaders to open more dialogue with the opposition, but avoiding too much public pressure.

There are signs of growing impatience with Bahrain's rulers from some U.S. lawmakers. A $53 million arms deal with Bahrain is on hold until the upcoming report is examined.

For Gulf leaders, led by powerful Saudi Arabia, the showdown in Bahrain is seen as a firewall to keep pro-reform protests from spreading further across the region. Gulf rulers have rallied behind the kingdom's embattled monarchy and sent in military reinforcements during the height of the crackdowns.

Bahrain is also viewed as a front-line fight against Iranian influence. The Sunni Arab monarchy and influential sheiks consider any significant gains by Bahrain's Shiites as a beachhead for Shiite powerhouse Iran, which has called the Saudi-led military units in Bahrain an "occupation force."

Earlier this month, Bahraini authorities accused five people of links to a suspected terror cell connected to Iran's Revolutionary Guard, whose alleged targets included attacks on the Saudi Embassy and the causeway linking Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Although there had been no direct evidence of links between Bahrain's Shiites and Tehran, the claims underscore the intensity of the Gulf's worries.

The fissures in Bahrain are not new. For decades, Shiites have pushed for a greater voice in a country where they account for 70 percent of the 525,000 people but are generally blocked from top political and government posts.

Following the start of the Arab Spring, Shiite-led protesters began occupying a square in the capital Manama in February ? just days after crowds in Cairo's Tahrir Square celebrated the downfall of Hosni Mubarak.

Weeks later, security forces stormed Manama's Pearl Square, tore down the landmark six-pronged monument at its center and imposed martial law. Hundreds of activists, political leaders and Shiite professionals such as lawyers, doctors, nurses and athletes were jailed and tried on anti-state crimes behind closed doors in a special security court that was set up during emergency rule.

Three protesters have been sentenced to death and several prominent opposition leaders were sentenced to life in prison.

Bahrain's rulers have offered some concessions, including giving more powers to parliament and opening up a so-called "national dialogue" on reforms. But authorities have rebuffed a key protest demand for the monarchy to give up control of top government posts and share privileges.

As part of the attempts to quell protests, Bahrain in July approved an international commission to look into the protests and crackdowns.

The five-member panel's chairman, Mahmoud Cherif Bassiouni, an Egyptian-born professor of international criminal law and a former member of U.N. human rights panels, praised the kingdom for a historic decision.

It was unprecedented, Bassiouni said, for an Arab Muslim country that has gone through "a difficult time" to have an independent investigation "irrespective of where the chips might fall."

In a statement Monday, Bahrain said it expects the report by the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry will be critical.

"Regrettably, there have been instances of excessive force and mistreatment of detainees," the government said, adding that prosecutors have charged 20 members of the security forces for alleged abuse of protesters during the uprising.

It also signaled more punishment for the abuses, saying the 20 prosecutions that had been filed are "in no way the limit of the steps that will be taken."

A group of Bahrain rights groups, meanwhile, issued its own report on the unrest, accusing authorities of "systematic" abuses and "unceasing human rights violations."

Can an Airline Pilot Really ?Make Up? Time During a Flight?

It?s far more often the case that a pilot will try to make up some time by means of a minor rerouting. If a plane is running late, the pilot can ask the control tower for permission to take a shortcut (due to the mapping of standard ?airways,? many flights don?t follow a straight line to their destination); however, the availability of this option depends on where the plane is going, as well as upon congestion. Certain routes?for example, between Newark and Atlanta?are already so direct that shortcuts don?t exist. For special holiday periods like Thanksgiving, the FAA does sometimes open otherwise restricted military airspace, allowing for more direct or less congested routes between certain locations.

This Rum-Flavored ?Caviar? Adds a Little Punch to Any Holiday Drink [Kitchen Hacks]

This Rum-Flavored “Caviar” Adds a Little Punch to Any Holiday Drink If you're game for a little molecular gastronomy at home (a form of cooking where you play with your food to create new textures and flavors) this rum "caviar" takes a few minutes to make and creates small jelly-like balls that, when you eat them, taste like a mild rum. They're perfect for any cocktail that calls for rum, or even for non-alcoholic drinks like store-bought eggnog that you want to add a little punch to.

The beauty of the rum caviar is that you don't need much to make it. A little vegetable oil, some agar agar (a gelatin substitute, available at most health food markets and grocery stores), an eye dropper, and of course, dark rum. The blog Mix That Drink walks us through the process, but it doesn't take long and the results are delicious, milder flavored than straight rum, and can be stored for weeks, on-hand for any drink or recipe that needs a little extra special flavor.

Thanks to Jen for sending in the tip!

Disgraced ex-Boston archbishop leaves Rome job

(AP) ? Cardinal Bernard Law, who resigned in disgrace as Boston's archbishop in 2002 after the priest sex abuse scandal exploded in the United States, has left his subsequent job as head of a major Roman basilica.

The Vatican said Monday that Pope Benedict XVI had accepted the 80-year-old Law's resignation as archpriest of St. Mary Major basilica and had named as Law's replacement Spanish Monsignor Santos Abril y Castello.

Law's 2004 appointment as the archpriest of one of Rome's most important basilicas had been harshly criticized by advocates for clerical sex abuse victims, who say bishops who covered up for pedophile priests should be punished, not rewarded.

Law turned 80 earlier this month.

While the pope could have kept him on longer ? the dean of the College of Cardinals, for example, turns 84 this week ? Benedict decided to replace him.

The Vatican announcement made no mention of Law's resignation, though, merely noting in a perfunctory, two-line statement that Benedict had named a new archpriest for the basilica.

Law became the first ? and so far only ? U.S. bishop to resign for mishandling cases of priests who sexually abused priests.

He had been named in hundreds of lawsuits accusing him of failing to protect children from known child molesters. After 18 years leading the nation's fourth-largest archdiocese, Law resigned in 2002, having asked Pope John Paul II twice before receiving permission to step down before reaching the mandatory retirement age for bishops of 75.

Ten months after he left office, Law's successor, now-Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley helped broker an $85 million settlement with more than 550 victims of pedophile priests.

Law remains a member of a half-dozen important Vatican congregations, including the office that helps the pope select bishops. Such appointments are for renewable five-year terms and it's not clear when each one expires or whether he'll seek to stay on.

While he was in Rome, Law was a frequent presence at all major Vatican ceremonial and diplomatic events, a lifestyle that galled many abuse victims who have long insisted that the Vatican crack down on bishops who transfer abusive priests rather than report them to police.

Law's successor at St. Mary Major ? one of the four basilicas under the direct jurisdiction of the Vatican ? retired earlier this year as the Vatican's ambassador to Slovenia and Macedonia.

Abril y Castello, 76, is also the No. 2 prelate who helps take care of matters dealing with a papal death and runs the Vatican until a new pontiff is elected in a conclave.

Now that he is 80, Law can no longer vote in a conclave, though he remains a cardinal.
