Macklemore's Pro-Gay ?You Can Play? PSA: Watch The ...

Out Of The Thrift Shop & Into The Streets!

The latest artist to throw their high-profile support behind gay youths who are struggling with bullying and their identities is chart-topping, bargain-shopping Seattle MC Macklemore, who, along with Ryan Lewis, recently spent four weeks atop the Hot 100 with breakout hit ?Thrift Shop.? In a new video clip for the You Can Play campaign, the 29-year-old, whose real name is Ben Haggerty, says, ?Things are really good for us right now.? He later adds, ?We?ve also got some great friends and family, and some of them are gay.?

Bringing the point home, Haggerty continues: ?You know someone who?s gay: athletes, musicians ? people in your life. They just haven?t told you yet.?

The rapper says that being gay doesn?t matter, because if ?you have the skills, talent and the heart, you can play. Don?t let being gay hold you back.? He then notes that anti-gay language has ?no place in sports or music.?

And, hey ? if there?s anyone who knows all about maintaining a cool balance of confidence in their life, it?s the man who penned the line, ?Walk into the club like, ?What up? I got a big cock!??

Dear Anne Hathaway: The Oscars Made Us Like You Less

Sunday was the biggest night of Anne Hathaway's life, and she didn't let us forget it. For months, the actress gushed to any magazine or TV show that would listen about her Les Miserables performance: how she was inspired by her actress mother, how she starved herself and chopped off her hair to play the role, how she decided to sing "the truth" instead of "the pretty version" of "I Dreamed a Dream." It's a great story, and a great performance -- but as awards season has worn on, Hathaway's combination of gee-whiz enthusiasm and self-important actor-speak has gotten tiresome. With the Hathaway backlash in full force, the Academy Awards was her last chance to make a good impression.

Italians head to polls in crucial vote for euro zone

ROME (Reuters) - Italians began voting on Sunday in one of the most closely watched elections in years, with markets nervous about whether it will produce a strong government to pull Italy out of recession and help resolve the euro zone debt crisis.

A huge final rally by anti-establishment-comedian-turned-politician Beppe Grillo on Friday before a campaigning ban kicked in has highlighted public anger at traditional parties and added to uncertainty about the election outcome.

Voters started casting their ballots at 0700 GMT. Polling booths will remain open until 2100 GMT on Sunday and between 0600-1400 GMT on Monday. Exit polls will come out soon after voting ends and official results are expected by early Tuesday.

The election is being followed closely by financial markets with memories still fresh of the potentially catastrophic debt crisis that brought technocrat Prime Minister Mario Monti to power more than a year ago.

Italy, the euro zone's third-largest economy, is stuck in deep recession, struggling under a public debt burden second only to Greece's in the 17-member currency bloc and with a public weary of more than a year of harsh austerity policies.

Final polls published two weeks ago showed center-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani with a 5-point lead, but analysts disagree about whether he will be able to form a stable majority that can push though the economic reforms Italy needs.

Bersani is now thought to be just a few points ahead of center-right rival Silvio Berlusconi, the four-times prime minister who has promised tax refunds and staged a media blitz in an attempt to win back voters.

BERLUSCONI CRITICISM

Berlusconi hogged the headlines on Sunday after he broke the campaign silence the previous evening attack magistrates, saying they were "more dangerous than the Sicilian mafia" and had invented allegations he held sex parties to discredit him.

The 76-year-old billionaire, who faces several trials on charges ranging from fraud to sex with an underage prostitute, was criticized by his election rivals for making the comments after the campaigning ban had come into force.

While the center left is still expected to gain control of the lower house, thanks to rules that guarantee a strong majority to whichever party wins the most votes nationally, a much closer battle will be fought in the Senate, which any government also needs to control to be able to pass laws.

Seats in the upper house are awarded on a region-by-region basis, meaning that support in key regions can decisively influence the overall result.

Pollsters still believe the most likely outcome is a center-left government headed by Bersani and possibly backed by Monti, who is leading a centrist coalition.

But strong campaigning by Berlusconi and the fiery Grillo, who has drawn tens of thousands to his election rallies, have thrown the election wide open, causing concern that there may be no clear winner.

Surveys have shown up to 5 million voters are expected to make up their minds at the last minute, adding to uncertainty.

Italy's Interior Ministry urged some 47 million eligible voters to not let bad weather forecasts put them off, and said it was prepared to handle snowy conditions in some northern regions to ensure everyone had a chance to vote.

STAGNANT ECONOMY

Whatever government emerges from the vote will have the task of pulling Italy out of its longest recession for 20 years and reviving an economy largely stagnant for two decades.

The main danger for Italy and the euro zone is a weak government incapable of taking firm action, which would rattle investors and could ignite a new debt crisis.

Monti replaced Berlusconi in November 2011 after Italy came close to Greek-style financial meltdown while the center-right government was embroiled in scandals.

The former European Commissioner launched a tough program of spending cuts, tax hikes and pension reforms which won widespread international backing and helped restore Italy's credibility abroad after the scandals of the Berlusconi era.

Italy's borrowing costs have since fallen sharply after the European Central Bank pledged it was prepared to support countries undertaking reforms by buying unlimited quantities of their bonds on the markets.

But economic austerity has fuelled anger among Italians grappling with rising unemployment and shrinking disposable incomes, encouraging many to turn to Grillo, who has tapped into a national mood of disenchantment.

Te'o doing tough balancing act at NFL combine

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Manti Te'o wants everyone to know he's over the embarrassment of an online hoax, and he's ready to focus on football.

The Heisman Trophy runner-up acknowledges he could have done things to avoid a public spectacle. But he says if he was still embarrassed by it, he wouldn't have taken questions Saturday at the NFL's annual scouting combine.

Instead, nearly two dozen television cameras and a room full of reporters were capturing every word out of Te'o's mouth as he again tried to explain how he was duped into believing a girlfriend that never existed died last fall.

It was the largest group of reporters Te'o has faced since the story broke last month

More than 300 players, including Te'o, are in Indy this weekend to work out for NFL scouts.

Early wreck in Daytona 500 takes out favorites

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? With one massive wreck, the favorite was gone from the Daytona 500. So was the sentimental favorite.

An early crash in the Daytona 500 on Sunday knocked out several top contenders, including 2007 race winner Kevin Harvick and three-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart, shaking up NASCAR's opener.

Winner of two races at Speedweeks, Harvick was sent to the garage.

So was Stewart. He must now wait another season to try for his first Daytona 500 win after he failed in his 15th try at winning "The Great American Race." In 17 seasons spanning NASCAR and IndyCar, Stewart has been able to cross most everything off his to-do list. Just not the Daytona 500.

"If I didn't tell you I was heartbroken and disappointed, I'd be lying to you," Stewart said.

While taking the checkered was out of the picture, Stewart ditched the safety goggles and grabbed some tools in the garage to repair his No. 14.

Stewart eventually returned to the track ? only 82 laps back. Safe to say, he was a bit of a long shot.

The nine-car wreck started when Kasey Kahne let off the gas to slow as they neared the first turn at Daytona International Speedway. Kyle Busch tried to do the same, but couldn't avoid contact.

Busch sent Kahne spinning across the track. Juan Pablo Montoya, 2010 race winner Jamie McMurray and defending series champion Brad Keselowski also were involved. So were Kurt Busch and Casey Mears.

"It's crazy. I can't believe it," Kahne said. "I mean, I wanted to race."

The accident came a day after a horrific wreck in a second-tier NASCAR series race hurled chunks of debris, including a heavy tire, into the stands and injured nearly 30 people.

It also ended Harvick's attempt to become the first in NASCAR history to win the exhibition Sprint Unlimited, a twin qualifying race and the Daytona 500 in the same Speedweeks.

"I don't know who was behind me, but it was just one of those deals," Harvick said.

Harvick stripped his firesuit down to his waist and rode off in a golf cart, a more solemn ride than his two trips to Victory Lane this week. Harvick had dominated in Speedweeks as the prelude to his final season driving a Richard Childress Chevrolet. He won last weekend's Sprint Unlimited and one of the Duel races, each time plopping his son Keelan into the cockpit for a quick rub of good luck.

This time, his battered No. 29 couldn't be saved. Crew members pounded away at sheet metal trying to salvage a return for Stewart.

The parade of wreckers entering the garage hauled the dented or totaled remains of some of the sport's heaviest hitters. Montoya is a former Indianapolis 500 winner. Busch won the 2004 Cup championship. None of them had a chance to pad his resume.

"You could see it coming. They were all checking up," Montoya said. "And I thought, 'Somebody isn't going to check up and screw up.' And, then, they did."

Stewart won the crash-marred Nationwide Series on Saturday for his 19th victory at Daytona in all other levels of NASCAR except for Cup. He has more wins at one of NASCAR's most famous tracks except for Dale Earnhardt (34). Earnhardt won the Daytona 500 in his 20th try.

Stewart will at least stretch it out to 16.

The race might not be a total loss for Stewart. His Stewart-Haas Racing team fields the car for pole winner Danica Patrick. Patrick became the first woman to lead a lap in the famed Daytona 500 on Sunday. She led two laps ? Nos. 90 and 91. On the starting grid, Stewart gave her a big hug and whispered into her ear before she slid into the cockpit.

Told the accident spoiled the start of his season, Stewart wasn't buying it.

"To hell with the season," he said. "I wanted to win the Daytona 500.

UFC cutting Jon Fitch, others sends chilling message to fighters

The UFC pulled a surprising move on Wednesday, but it had nothing to do with a fight no one expected. Instead, the UFC gave the pink slip to several fighters, including one former title contender with an impressive UFC record.

According to MMAFighting, these fighters have been cut:

Jon Fitch
Wagner Prado
Mike Russow
Jacob Volkmann
Vladimir Matyushenko
Che Mills
Jay Hieron
Terry Etim
Paul Sass
Jorge Santiago
Mike Stumpf
Simeon Thoresen
C.J. Keith
Motonobu Tezuka
Josh Grispi
Ulysses Gomez

Though Fitch fought and lost to Georges St-Pierre at UFC 87, he is 1-2-1 in his last four fights and has a reputation for putting on grinding, slower-paced fights. Jacob Volkmann and Mike Russow have the same reputation. Santiago went 0-2 in the UFC, left and won one fight, then lost again over the weekend. After putting together an impressive run in the UFC, Grispi lost four fights in a row in the UFC.

Every one of the fighters is coming off of at least one loss. In the past, a fighter would worry about his job if he lost two fights in a row. However, MMA Junkie's John Morgan says the UFC is looking to trim its roster. With fighters coming over from Strikeforce, and the addition of the men's flyweight and women's bantamweight divisions, the UFC is going to have to make more tough decisions like this. Fighters have to win to keep their job.

(AP) ? Here comes the sequester: big federal spending cuts and a new season of economic uncertainty for a nation still trying to shake off a recession.

The politics of sequestration have been fierce, the finger-pointing incessant. And to no one's surprise, what was designed as a way out of one Washington standoff has produced another one ? and more. A week out from the March 1 deadline, there are no meaningful efforts in Washington to avert the punishing automatic cuts set out in a law nearly two years ago.

Bellowing and blame aside, what really would happen if, as expected, President Barack Obama and congressional lawmakers allow the nation to blow past the deadline?

Q: What's the big overall picture?

A: A series of cuts to federal agencies that would lead to longer lines at the nation's borders, less money for teachers and more hassle at airport checkpoints. Virtually every dollar approved each year by Congress would be slashed by a uniform amount, which would mean at least temporary layoffs for hundreds of thousands of public and private-sector workers. Programs like Medicare and Social Security are exempt, but there is no question the slashing of other programs would slow the nation's fragile economic recovery.

Q: And the big numbers?

A: Under a 2011 law designed to avert exactly this type of inaction, March 1 means automatic cuts of $85 billion from a $3.6 trillion budget over the seven months spanning March-September. That would include cuts of 8 percent to the Pentagon and 5 percent to domestic agency operating budgets. More than 3.8 million Americans who have been jobless for six months or longer could see their unemployment benefits reduced by as much as 9.4 percent.

Q: Why is this happening, what's actually going to occur and who is likely to be most affected. First, how did we get here?

A: The seeds of the sequester were sown by a demand by House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, that the 2011 debt limit increase be matched, dollar-for-dollar, by cuts in federal spending. After "grand bargain" talks between Boehner and Obama broke down, the White House came up with the sequester idea as a way to guarantee large enough deficit cuts to offset enough new borrowing to make sure Washington didn't have to revisit the debt limit until after the 2012 elections. The sequester threat was designed to be so harsh that it would drive the sides to compromise on an alternative.

It didn't work. House Republicans twice last year passed legislation to replace the cuts with larger savings drawn from programs like food stamps and federal employee pensions. Democrats controlling the Senate didn't offer an alternative and instead put their faith in postelection negotiations to avert the "fiscal cliff," which resulted in Obama claiming victory on his promise to raise taxes on the rich but only a two-month respite from the sequester. Now, Republicans say they won't give in to demands by Obama and the Democrats controlling the Senate for higher taxes as part of any solution.

Q: How quickly will the sequester's impact be felt? How will we notice it?

A: It depends. At first, the general public may not much notice the cuts. The sequester isn't a government shutdown; it's a government slowdown. Furloughs of federal workers ? forced unpaid days off ? generally won't start for a month due to notification requirements. Many government contracts would still be funded using money previously approved even as agencies slow down the awards of new contracts. But furloughs of workers like air traffic controllers, meat inspectors, FBI agents, the Border Patrol and park rangers will mean an inevitable deterioration of noticeable government services that could, for instance, force intermittent closures of meat packing plants and shorter operating hours at smaller airports.

Other impacts will be more subtle, like longer waits at security checkpoints at airports and along the Mexican border or for cargo inspections at ports. Cuts inside the Defense Department will be particularly acute, in part because military pay is exempt, which will force sharper cuts on the rest of the budget, particularly training and maintenance. Civilian Pentagon workers will face furloughs of 22 days through the end of September. Basically, if you work for the government or do business with it, you'll be hardest hit.

Q: Will it harm the economy?

A: Yes. The Congressional Budget Office estimates it will cost 750,000 jobs and lower economic growth by 0.6 percent. That's because the cuts drain demand from the economy and affect companies that do business with the government.

Q: How big are the cuts? Huge numbers?

A: Over a decade, the cuts total about $1 trillion, half from defense and half from domestic programs. There's an additional $200 billion or so in lower government interest payments. For this budget year, the Congressional Budget Office estimates the cuts are $42.7 billion from defense (8 percent) and $42.7 billion from domestic programs (5 percent). Because the cuts are backloaded into the last seven months of the budget year, they feel more like a 13 percent cut to the Pentagon and 9 percent cut to domestic agencies during that period. And these are real cuts from agency budgets that have been essentially frozen at last year's levels.

Q: Aren't a lot of programs exempt?

A: Yes. The majority of the federal budget is in fact walled off from the cuts. Social Security and veterans' programs are exempt, and cuts to Medicare are generally limited to a 2 percent, $10 billion reduction in payments to hospitals and doctors. Most programs that help the poor, like Medicaid, food stamps, subsidized school lunches, Pell Grants and supplemental security income payments are also exempt.

Q: How much discretion do the agency heads have on what to cut, and when?

A: Not much. The cuts are supposed to apply equally to every "program, project and activity." That means, for instance, that the Agriculture Department can't take money designated for Boll Weevil research and use it to pay meat inspectors. Some lawmakers want to give agency heads greater flexibility to shift money around, but the administration says that would be of only limited help. The White House has told agencies to avoid cuts presenting "risks to life, safety or health" and to minimize harm to crucial services.

Q: OK, say it's now March 2, and the sequester has gone into effect. Is there any way to undo or limit it before much of its effect is felt?

A: Sure, but it'll take an act of Congress and Obama's signature. So the best chance for averting the sequester's major consequences might be to let it take effect and see if there's a widespread backlash from business and the public that somehow provokes lawmakers and Obama to compromise. That's hardly guaranteed. One legislative option would be to turn to a separate effort to prevent a government shutdown on March 27 and use that bill to address the sequester or to give agencies flexibility in mitigating its effects.

Some industry watchers had high hopes for BlackBerry?s (BBRY) first next-generation smartphone in its debut quarter, but it looks like they may have gotten ahead of themselves. Now, the Street is revising its estimates in light of a slower than expected rollout and what appears to be a softer launch than many had hoped for.

[More from BGR: Google shows us what it?s like to use Project Glass [video]]

Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley had initially called for BlackBerry to sell about 1.75 million BlackBerry Z10 smartphones in the February quarter. But after his checks following the phone?s launch in the UK and Canada found limited initial supply and softer than expected demand, the analyst slashed his estimates for the current quarter from 1.75 million units to just 300,000.

[More from BGR: Despite rumored of declining demand, Apple?s iPhone 5 is the No.1 smartphone in the world]

?Our global surveys post the recent BlackBerry Z10 launch indicated mixed initial sales with limited initial supply cited as the reason for early post-launch stock-outs at some carrier stores rather than overwhelming demand,? Walkley wrote in a note to investors. ?Our follow-up checks have indicated steady but modest sales levels. With new BB10 smartphones launching in the U.S. only in mid-March or later at subsidized prices no better than competing high-end Apple/Samsung smartphones, combined with our expectations for the Galaxy S IV to launch at a similar time frame in the US market, we are lowering our BB10 sales estimates for the February quarter and all of F2014.?

The analyst continued, noting that ?modest Z10 sales into the channel in the U.K. and Canada? were largely responsible for his decision to lower his Z10 sales estimates by 83% for the February quarter. Moving forward, Walkley believes things will remain bleak for BlackBerry.

?We believe carrier support for BlackBerry 10 in the U.S. is modest, as demonstrated by Sprint only planning to launch the Q10 and T-Mobile only the Z10,? he wrote. ?Further, we anticipate carriers will not build large inventory levels for BB10, consistent with prior BB7 high-end launches, and will initially stock modest levels given the weaker consumer demand for high-end BlackBerry smartphones.?

Walkley continued, ?With our expectations BB10 smartphones will face increasing competition from a host of new Android and Windows smartphones and potentially a new iPhone in 1H/C2013, we anticipate global carrier partners will order cautious initial BB10 inventory levels, leading us to lower our Feb. quarter and F2014 BB10 estimates.?

Canaccord maintained its Sell rating on BlackBerry shares with a $9 price target.

Chavez back in Venezuela, on Twitter with 4 million followers

CARACAS (Reuters) - After Hugo Chavez spent two months out of the public eye for cancer surgery in Cuba, the Venezuelan government hailed his homecoming on Monday and said the president had achieved another milestone - four million followers on Twitter.

The 58-year-old flew back from Havana before dawn and was taken to a military hospital. No new details were given on his health, and there were no images of his arrival. Officials say his condition remains delicate.

The normally loquacious socialist leader, who is struggling to speak as he breathes through a tracheal tube, took to Twitter with a passion back in April 2010, tweeting regularly and encouraging other leftist Latin American leaders to do likewise.

His @chavezcandanga account quickly drew a big mixed following of fans, critics and others just curious to see how his famously long speeches and fiery anti-U.S. invective would work within the social media network's 140-character limit.

But as he fought the cancer and underwent weeks of grueling chemotherapy and radiation therapy, he began to tweet less and less frequently, before stopping altogether on November 1.

Early on Monday morning, he made his reappearance.

"It was 4:30, 5 a.m. He got to his room and surprised everyone: rat-tat-tat, he sent three or four messages, and at that moment fireworks began to go off around the country," Vice President Nicolas Maduro said in a televised cabinet meeting.

During the day, Maduro added, the president's number of followers had shot up to well over four million.

"It's incredible, in just a few hours ... he's the second most-followed president in the world (after Barack Obama), and the first if we make the comparison by per capita," he said.

Obama has more than 27 million Twitter followers and is No. 5 most followed globally. Chavez is Twitter's No. 190 globally.

4TH MILLION FOLLOWER

Maduro said Chavez's four millionth follower was a 20-year-old single Venezuelan woman named Alemar Jimenez from the gritty San Juan neighborhood in downtown Caracas, near the military hospital where the president arrived earlier in the day.

"She's one of the golden generation of youth who support the fatherland and have been waiting with growing love for commander Hugo Chavez," Maduro said, before presenting a dazzled-looking Jimenez to the cameras and giving her a bunch of flowers.

"We were really emotional" she said, recounting how she was with her mother when they heard Chavez had returned. "I sent him a message on Twitter saying he must get better."

There are still big questions over the president's health. He could have come back to govern from behind the scenes, or he may be hoping to ease political tensions and pave the way for a transition to Maduro, his preferred successor.

Chavez has often ordered followers to fight back against opposition critics of his self-styled revolution by using social media, leading from the front himself on Twitter and referring to the Internet as a "battle trench."

As his ranks of followers grew, Chavez said he hired 200 assistants to help him respond to messages - which he said were a great way to receive first-hand the requests, demands, complaints and denunciations of citizens in the thousands.

During his re-election campaign last year, the government launched an SMS text message service that forwards his tweets to cellphones that lack Internet service, broadening their reach to the poorest corners of the South American country.

"He's a communication revolution!" Maduro said, later unbuttoning his shirt on TV to show he was wearing a T-shirt bearing Chavez's eyes emblazoned across his chest.

For the tens of thousands who signed up on Monday to follow Chavez on Twitter, it is unclear how much will be posted there in the weeks and months ahead. Venezuela's 29 million people are mostly wondering something similar.

Family of slain model Reeva Steenkamp holds funeral

Pallbearers carry the coffin of the late South African model Reeva Steenkamp into the crematorium building in Port Elizabeth Tuesday.

By Ian Johnston, Staff Writer, NBC News

The funeral of model and law-school graduate Reeva Steenkamp ? slain by her boyfriend Oscar Pistorius ? was held in South Africa Tuesday.

As a magistrate ruled he would be prosecuted for premeditated murder, family and friends of Steenkamp spoke of their grief.

Pistorius? lawyers have admitted he shot Steenkamp while she was in a small, locked bathroom, but claim he thought she was an intruder.

Adam Steenkamp, Reeva?s brother, spoke to reporters after the service at a 90-seat chapel in Port Elizabeth, where Steenkamp grew up.

A mourner at model Reeva Steenkamp's funeral holds the ceremony program Tuesday.

?There?s a space missing inside all the people that she knew,? he said.

?Everyone is sad understandably, but at certain points we were smiling whilst remembering Reeva because we only have good memories of her,? he added.

'He's a danger'
Reeva?s uncle Mike Steenkamp thanks people who had sent message of support, saying he had been ?amazed? that people were ?so touched by Reeva?s passing away.?

A cousin, Sharon, said that Reeva?s ?love is in our hearts.?

Referring to the bail hearing Tuesday, one mourner, Gavin Venter, an ex-jockey who worked for Reeva's father, told Reuters that Pistorius should remain in jail.

"Without a doubt. He's a danger to the public. He'll be a danger to witnesses. He must stay in jail. He's already shown how dangerous he can be for what he did to Reeva," he said.

Her mother, June Steenkamp, said in an interview with The Times of Johannesburg, that her bubbly, blonde daughter was "the most beautiful person who ever lived."

"Why my little girl?" she said.

"All we have is this horrendous death to deal with ... to get to grips with," she added. "All we want are answers ... answers as to why this had to happen, why our beautiful daughter had to die like this."

Reuters contributed to this report.

Will software robots really decrease offshoring and increase UK jobs ...

I have written quite a few articles about business automation software in the past.

It seems that Intellect is now promoting the technology and embarking on a drive to help UK businesses understand the benefits.

Business process automation is all about the use of software robots to reduce the cost in time and money carrying out common business processes. Manual triggers are being replaced by software which integrates disparate systems to enable an end to end business process. Costs are saved by the reduced need for people.

This is being spoken of as a replacement for bodies offshore. For example UK mobile operator 02 took up automation software and as a result greatly reduced its reliance on offshore workers.? Better news for UK workers is that by automating work you actually create UK jobs.

IT suppliers organisation Intellect is, through a campaign, trying to increase understanding of automation amongst UK businesses. It says automation is greatly under-utilised in the UK.
Intellect says that if a company that offshores back office processes automates them with software it will not only require fewer offshore workers but will also need more UK staff to manage the robots. For example 02 is cited as reducing its offshore headcount by 50 through automation software while at the same time creating 15 UK jobs.

There are broadly two kinds of automation software I write about. These are back office automation as mentioned above and then there is IT automation. Because IT infrastructures are largely the same at all businesses regardless of industry, there is great potential for using standardised tools to automate IT tasks. This will enable IT workers to focus on transformational jobs.

I spoke to the UK head at IT automation software maker IPSoft and he reckons offshore IT suppliers will be doomed unless they harness automation software and change their business modes.

What do you think about automation software?

A Week In Movies: Beautiful Creatures opens, Tom Cruise visits a post-apocalyptic Earth and Billy Crystal and John Goodman reunite in Monsters University

Jeremy Irons & Alice Englert in Beautiful Creatures

Being Valentine's Day week, cinemas are flooded with romantic movies like the new teen franchise-launcher Beautiful Creatures. US audiences can also weep their way through the new Nicholas Sparks drama Safe Haven, while in the UK couples instead can laugh at Judd Apatow's epic rom-com This Is 40 and the clunky British farce Run For Your Wife. And for alternative viewing, there's the ultimate date movie A Good Day to Die Hard, Bruce Willis' fifth instalment in the crashing, exploding franchise.

And this kind of action dominates the week's new selection of trailers, starting with the very explosive-looking Olympus Has Fallen, starring Gerard Butler as a Secret Service agent trying to retake the White House after a terrorist invasion. The muscly cast includes Morgan Freeman, Aaron Eckhart, Angela Bassett and Melissa Leo. It opens in March.

Tom Cruise in Oblivion

Into the future now for a much more detailed trailer for Tom Cruise's next big action movie Oblivion, which also costars Morgan Freeman, this time as the head of some sort of secret society on a post-apocalyptic Earth after all humans were supposed to have been evacuated to live in the sky. Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough and Nikolai Coster-Waldau costar in the thriller, which opens in April.

There's more trouble from space in the supernatural thriller Dark Skies, which looks pretty harrowing. From the producer of Paranormal Activity and Insidious, it stars Keri Russell and Josh Hamilton as suburban parents whose home is invaded by something seriously freaky. It opens next week in America and two weeks later in Britain.

But of course the movie we all want to see is Monsters University, the prequel to 2001's Monsters Inc. It reteams Billy Crystal and John Goodman to voice Mike and Sulley in their university days. We also see a younger Randall, the villainous chameleon-like critter again voiced by Steve Buscemi. It opens this summer.

Peter Dinklage with his award

And finally, we have the news that Peter Dinklage is set to join the action in X-Men: Days of Future Past, the hotly anticipated sequel that combines the casts of First Class (Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, etc) and the original X-Men trilogy (Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, etc), plus original director Bryan Singer. Filming starts soon, and a summer 2014 release is planned.

College Basketball Coach Sinks Half-Court Shot To Pay For Student's Tuition

College Basketball Coach Sinks Half-Court Shot To Pay For Student's Tuition Gil Cheung is head coach of the men's basketball program at Brandon University in Canada. On Friday, he sank a half-court shot, effectively paying one student's tuition.

The Brandon Bobcats men's and women's hoops teams have held the Smitty's Tuition Shootout at Friday home games: sink a half-court shot, get free tuition for the semester. The prize was at risk of going unclaimed entering in Friday's final home doubleheader against the Regina Cougars. The BU athletic department decided to give entrants the option to let anyone in the building take the shot.

Rather than select a player, Mason Kaluzniak, a phys-ed student, chose his professor Cheung who hit nothing but net.

Why Drones Should Make You Afraid. Very Afraid.

Are drones far down on your list of anxieties? Do lethal flying robots seem like something Pakistanis, Afghans and other inhabitants of faraway lands need to fear but not Americans? Let me give you a few reasons why Americans should be worried. Most of this material?plus much more?can be found in ?The Drones Come Home,? my article for the March issue of National Geographic Magazine.

Lethal "Switchblade" drone can fit in a backpack.

*The Obama administration has pledged to relax Federal Aviation Administration restrictions by 2015 to make it easier for the 18,000 U.S. law-enforcement agencies to deploy drones for surveillance and other uses. According to a report in today?s?New York Times, the Department of Homeland Security has also offered grants to help police departments purchase drones, which are ?becoming a darling of law-enforcement authorities across the country.?

*The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is funding research on ?micro-drones? that resemble moths, hummingbirds and other small flying creatures and hence can ?hide in plain sight,? as one Air Force researcher told me. The Air Force is now testing micro-drones at facilities such as the ?micro-aviary? at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.

*These micro-drones could be armed. The Air Force has produced an extrordinarily creepy animated video extolling possible applications of ?Micro Air Vehicles,? which a narrator extols as ?unobtrusive, pervasive, lethal.?? The video shows winged drones swarming out of the belly of a plane and descending on a city, where the drones stalk and kill a suspect.

*The U.S. military has already deployed a drone, called ?Switchblade? (see photo), that has foldable wings and can be packed into a tube not much bigger than a loaf of Italian bread. Switchblade packs a grenade-size charge.

*The Obama regime has quietly compiled legal arguments for assassinations of American citizens without a trial, as reported recently by NBC News. The administration has already carried out extrajudicial drone assassinations of at least two American citizens, the alleged Muslim militants Anwar al-Awlaki and Samir Khan, who were killed in Yemen in 2011.

*The enthusiasm of the U.S. for drones has triggered an international arms race. More than 50 other nations now possess drones, as well as non-governmental militant groups such as Hezbollah. U.S. security officials are so worried about the threat of drone terrorism that they have carried out mock attacks in a program named ?Black Dart.? Defense contractors such as Procerus Technologies are now developing software that will enable drones to track and destroy other drones.

Please read my National Geographic article for more details about drones. We are on the verge of a technological speciation event that could cause more harm than good. We must stay informed to make sure that drones are deployed for beneficial rather than insidious ends.
